    Clinical Care

    Overview

Iman Berrahou, MD, is a specialist in general obstetrics and gynecology who provides comprehensive care across both inpatient and outpatient settings—from the clinic to the operating room to labor and delivery. Her clinical focus includes general reproductive health, complex gynecology, and obstetrical care. She also performs advanced minimally invasive procedures, including robotic-assisted surgery and vaginal natural orifice transluminal endoscopic surgery (vNOTES).

Dr. Berrahou’s journey into medicine began in high school, sparked by her own experience recovering from an orthopedic injury sustained while playing basketball. “I was fascinated by the idea that surgery could help people regain the level of function they were striving for,” she recalls. She went on to study at Harvard Medical School, where that initial spark evolved into a deep passion for obstetrics and gynecology.

“I love working with patients from start to finish — whatever that path might mean for them,” Berrahou says. “Whether I see a patient once or many times over many years, I enjoy learning who they are as a person, understanding what their goals are in managing their condition, and then helping them progress toward those goals. There are many ways to achieve a good health outcome. Figuring out together what the patient needs medically, and aligning those needs with what is best for their life and family — that is one of the most rewarding things about my work.”

While Dr. Berrahou “very intentionally loves a broad practice” and cares for patients from all backgrounds, a significant portion of her patient population identifies as LGBTQIA+. This population also inspires her current research. “I see many patients with risk factors for gynecologic cancers,” she explains. “Yet we know very little about how these cancers affect the LGBTQIA+ community. It’s an understudied area with a serious lack of data—and I’m working to help fill that gap.”

Dr. Berrahou is advancing research at the intersection of OB/GYN and LGBTQIA+ health. Informed by her clinical experiences, her work explores not only how obstetrical and gynecologic care impacts LGBTQIA+ patients, but also how insights from this community can shape the future of the field itself.

In her role as residency program director, Dr. Berrahou is also dedicated to training the next generation of OB/GYN clinicians. “It’s a tremendous privilege to serve as an educator, alongside my work as a clinician and researcher,” she says. “The residents I train are already exceptional physicians. Being part of their journey—and helping them grow into the best versions of themselves—is incredibly rewarding.”

Dr. Berrahou received her medical degree from Harvard Medical School and completed her residency at the University of California San Francisco before joining the faculty at Yale.
