    Biography

I am biochemist with a background in the study of the dynamics of cellular membranes. I earned my Biochemistry degree from the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU) and completed my Ph.D. at the BIOFISIKA Institute (UPV/EHU, CSIC), where my research focused on the mode of action of apoptosis-related BCL-2 family proteins. During a brief postdoctoral stay at the same institute, I explored membrane fusion facilitated by the autophagic LC3 conjugation system.

Currently, I work as an Associate Research Scientist at Yale University in Erdem Karatekin's laboratory. I focus on investigating membrane fusion, fission, and membrane flows at both molecular and cellular levels with the broad goal of understanding how these processes influence one another and are linked to higher physiological functions. Recently I have contributed to the understanding of the mechanism underlying membrane fission during sporulation in Bacillus subtilis, revealing a previously unappreciated second function of DNA translocation in energizing the process under energy-limited conditions. In future studies, I aim to explore how lipids and other components are transported across the membrane compartments that form during sporulation.
