Practice makes perfect for emergency deliveries. The Yale Center for Healthcare Simulation (YCHS) conducted a simulation involving the Yale New Haven Children's Hospital transport team, pediatric emergency room staff, and neonatal specialists. The training focused on rehearsing coordinated care across the full continuum of emergency response.
The training scenario depicted a mother delivering her child early at 38 weeks inside of an ambulance. During the scenario, the medical professionals supported the patient at all stages until stabilization was achieved for safe transport to the hospital.
By fully integrating prehospital, transport, and in-hospital teams, the simulation strengthened shared mental models and prepared personnel for real-world coordination during high-risk home births or out-of-hospital neonatal emergencies.
Led by Brooke Redmond, MD, assistant professor (neonatal-perinatal medicine), the scenario emphasized procedural discipline, teamwork, and communication. Marc Auerbach, MD, professor of pediatrics (emergency medicine) and of emergency medicine, provided support throughout the session.
The framework allowed each medical discipline to practice role clarity, rapid information exchange, and safe patient handoffs during complex neonatal events.
