Biography

I earned my bachelor’s degree in molecular biochemistry and biochemistry at Yale University and medical degree at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. I completed my residency training in pediatrics and fellowship training in pediatric endocrinology at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP), and joined the faculty in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Pennsylvania. In 2002 I returned to Yale to focus my research on the continuous glucose sensors and insulin pumps toward the development of an artificial pancreas. I am the Principal Investigator of several NIH- and JDRF- funded artificial pancreas projects. My most recent projects include large-scale clinical trials in automated insulin delivery (artificial pancreas), development of new automated insulin delivery systems specifically designed for young patients, and the studies to characterize the effects of diabetes on the young developing brain. In 2006 I earned Yale’s Mae Gailani Award for Outstanding Clinical Care & Research, and in 2009 I received the Dream Award from the Greater New Haven Chapter of the JDRF. In 2011 I was awarded, along with other principal investigators in the JDRF Continuous Glucose Monitoring Study Group, the Mary Tyler Moore and S. Robert Levine, MD Excellence in Clinical Research Award.

Clinical Care

Overview

Stuart A. Weinzimer, MD, cares for children with diabetes as well as other endocrine disorders. “During the years of my training in pediatric diabetes, I became aware of the overwhelming burden that diabetes can place on children and their loved ones,” says Dr. Weinzimer. “At the same time, I have witnessed the development of wonderful technologies to ease this burden. I am inspired every day to try to find ways to utilize these technologies to improve the health and outlook of people with diabetes and their loved ones.”

Yale Medicine Pediatrics Diabetes Program is world-renowned for its groundbreaking research in pediatric diabetes and its holistic interdisciplinary approach to care. “My most meaningful accomplishment has been to participate in the development of the artificial pancreas, which promises to transform the lives with people with type 1 diabetes and the people that care for them,” said Dr. Weinzimer, who is a principal investigator in several NIH and JDRF-funded artificial pancreas projects. “My most memorable patient is a young woman I have watched grow from a young toddler with diabetes to a healthy, well-adjusted woman, capable and confident, choosing to help others with diabetes.”

Dr. Weinzimer, a professor of pediatrics (endocrinology) at Yale School of Medicine, also is part of an interdisciplinary team that supports and cares for children and young adults exploring their gender identity.
