Pediatric Hepatology and Liver Transplant Program
Our mission is to provide world-class hepatology and transplant care to optimize the health outcomes of the children of Connecticut and neighboring areas. We are a team of physicians, surgeons, nurses and allied health professionals all devoted to improving the health of our patients through family-centered care. Our team members come with training and experience from pediatric centers of excellence across North America.
Together, we work to provide multidisciplinary care for a multitude of liver diseases including:
- Alpha-1-antitrypsin deficiency
- Autoimmune hepatitis
- Biliary atresia
- Biochemical genetic diseases
- Gallstone disease/gallbladder dysfunction
- Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (including non-alcoholic steatohepatitis)
- We partner with colleagues in nutrition, endocrinology and the Bright Bodies program
- Primary sclerosing cholangitis
- Viral Hepatitis (A, B, C and E)
- Wilson disease
Liver transplant candidates and recipients
When a patient meets indications for liver transplantation, we strive to optimize their health outcomes and quality of life, as we embark on this important journey with our patients and their families. Our multidisciplinary team provides evaluation and support for all aspects of care that are necessary for children to thrive.
Our living donation program provides our transplant candidates with access to the gift of life. In fact, our program is unique with an amazingly high rate of living donation, with 40% of our patients having received a liver graft from another living person! Some of the donors are related to our transplant recipients, while others are altruistic donors: people who have donated an organ to another person they have never met!
