Pediatric Hospital Medicine Fellowship


The Yale Pediatric Hospital Medicine Section aims to train leaders in the field of Pediatric Hospital Medicine who are compassionate clinicians, effective teachers, and impactful scholars to improve the care provided to hospitalized children.

The program aims to equip fellows with the knowledge, skills, and competencies needed to effectively take care of hospitalized children and to become a future leader in the field of pediatric hospital medicine (PHM). The fellowship follows the general curricular framework published by the Council of Pediatric Hospital Medicine Fellowship Directors (Jerardi K, et al., Pediatrics, 2017). Over the course of two years, fellows will receive training in clinical care, systems improvement, and scholarship. As such, over the course of the two years, fellows will complete activities focused on core hospital medicine skills, including in the care of newborns, general inpatient pediatrics, complex care, procedures, sedation and consultation on surgical patients. Training will occur in a tertiary care setting and at community sites.

In addition to the clinical activities, the fellow will participate in individualized curriculum “determined by the learning needs and career plans of each fellow and developed with the guidance of a faculty mentor” (ACGME PHM Accreditation Requirements, 2020). Areas of trainee interest for specialized curriculum could include, but are not limited to, medical education, quality improvement, health equity and clinical research. Fellows will be expected to meet the American Board of Pediatrics requirement for scholarly activity that applies to all pediatric subspecialty fellowships.

Faculty Providing Education and Supervision

The Yale PHM Fellowship Program has 16 faculty in the division of Pediatric Hospital Medicine who will provide education and supervision to the fellows. Additional board-certified faculty in the department of Pediatrics may provide education and supervision during elective clinical experiences as determined by each fellow’s individualized learning plan. Our program leadership is committed to improving diversity, equity and inclusion within our division. Fellows working within our division will learn how to improve equitable care throughout the health system and improve awareness and education of how certain factors, such as systemic racism, impact the health and wellbeing of our patients and staff.


  • Weekly section of Pediatric Hospital Medicine meetings (meeting content is divided amongst clinical discussion, journal club and faculty development. CME credit is provided for clinical discussion and journal club)
  • Bimonthly PHM Fellow’s Conferences (including simulation) led by PHM Faculty
  • Asynchronous learning modules in quality improvement
  • Medical education sessions through the Teaching and Learning Center
  • Fellows lecture series (weekly, from the Section of Education for all fellows in the Department of Pediatrics)
  • ICU Simulation in collaboration with PICU team


  • Direct observation and feedback of clinical and teaching skills while attending on the teaching service
  • Direct observation and feedback of resident and medical student teaching activities
  • End of rotation formative and summative feedback at the end of each teaching service block
  • Mentorship and feedback by primary scholarly project mentor with meeting frequency of at least every 6 months
  • Semi-annual meetings with program director/associate program director to review summative evaluations and assess progress in Pediatric Hospital Medicine Core Competencies (Maniscalco J, et al., J Hosp Med, 2020) and Entrustable Professional Activities For Subspecialties (EPAs)
