Profiles in Survivorship: Craig Studer

June 08, 2024

Craig Studer:

One day while checking in with the receptionist for my treatment, I noticed there were more patients with family members than usual. To somehow justify the number of people I observed, I said to the receptionist, “It’s a sad commentary that so many people are affected by cancer. It seems to be getting worse.”

Without skipping a beat, she profoundly responded, “It’s working,” and further stated, “Yeah, treatment is working.” She is so right – treatment is working!

For me, being a cancer survivor means I am fortunate. I am fortunate to be feeling better and surviving. And, I am fortunate to be under the care of the Smilow Cancer Hospital Early Phase Clinical Trials Program with Dr. Patricia LoRusso and her team.

I’ve learned cancer does not discriminate. It can affect anyone. Having cancer, I’ve learned to enjoy life and not sweat the little things. Instead, do things today that you may put off for the future. Hug your children and enjoy every relationship.

I want my cancer treatment team to know that I am truly grateful for your care. You truly make a difference in people’s lives. Stay the course. Thank you for treating the person and caring for people. Thank you for practicing the “ART of Medicine” as well as you do! You are making a difference. It is working!

Thank you.
