Overview
Michael P. Leslie DO, FAOA is an orthopaedic surgeon who specializes in the care and treatment of patients with complex orthopaedic injuries and complex hip replacement needs. He has particular expertise in hip reconstruction, replacement and revision surgeries. He cares for patients in collaboration with the multidisciplinary trauma team at Yale New Haven Hospital.
Dr. Leslie chose his field because he wanted to help people of all backgrounds and situations manage traumatic events, which can be among the most difficult experiences they will face. “I am able to provide a calm presence and bring the skill of many subspecialties to the patient,” he says.
Orthopaedic trauma has become an increasingly demanding specialty, in part because improvements in pre-hospital care from first responders mean that patients whose devastating injuries may once have been fatal are now more likely to arrive in the emergency room for treatment. “This field of treating broken bones requires constant engagement in new technology and techniques,” Dr. Leslie says. “At Yale Medicine, we are at the forefront of development and in educating the rest of the world in new techniques.”
Successful treatment of complex orthopaedic injuries requires a close relationship and collaborative effort on the part of both the surgeon and patient, he says, noting that patients are involved in decisions about their care. These important conversations can take place in the trauma bay or in the office, he adds. “Regardless of the scenario, we are ready to help patients at every turn.”
Dr. Leslie said he became a doctor of osteopathy—a specialist who treats patients using a holistic approach to patient care—because it allows him to take into account every aspect of his patient’s condition. He believes this is especially important in trauma, where patients often have medical problems in that need to be addressed in addition to their injury.
As a direct result of many years of experience in treating complex hip pathology, Dr. Leslie also practices the most innovative techniques relative to hip replacement surgery. As a leading direct anterior hip replacement surgeon he performs complex primary hip replacement, revision hip surgery and serves as a tertiary referral surgeon for solutions for hip replacement problems.
