Clinical Care
Overview
Uwe Fischer, MD, is a vascular surgeon who specializes in the entire spectrum of vascular problems. He cares for patients at Westerly Hospital in Rhode Island, and Lawrence and Memorial Hospital in New London, among other locations. He works closely with colleagues at Yale New Haven Hospital, where he performs complex procedures in a hybrid operating room. He is also a specialist in the interpretation of vascular laboratory studies.
He treats patients for a variety of vascular conditions, including aneurysms, carotid disease, peripheral arterial disease, varicose veins, and lower extremity limb preservation.
Dr. Fischer, who went to medical school in Germany, says it was always his dream to be a physician. Now he finds the most rewarding part of his work to be forming trustful relationships with patients. “My goal is always to form treatment partnerships with my patients and address all medical issues, and combat difficult tasks such as smoking cessation and compliance with treatment plans,” he says. “I am always available to my patients over the phone. This is one of my passions—to bypass any frustrating wait times and multiple steps to get an answer from me.”
Dr. Fischer started using telehealth long before the COVID-19 pandemic to provide easy access to care for patients, whether that involved follow-up visits after a procedure, discussion of test results, or consultations to answer their questions. In addition to his clinical work, he is a researcher interested in the impact of community outreach and telehealth on vascular care.
