Biography
Dr. Na’s research focuses on the intersection of genetic and psychosocial factors underlying substance use disorders and suicide. His work investigates how environmental and psychosocial influences contribute to addiction and suicidal behavior, with a particular emphasis on individuals with co-occurring substance use and psychiatric disorders. To date, he has published more than 90 peer-reviewed manuscripts and book chapters, with contributions appearing in leading journals such as JAMA Psychiatry, American Journal of Psychiatry, Molecular Psychiatry, and JAMA Network Open.
Dr. Na is also deeply engaged in efforts to advance mental health awareness and reduce stigma at the societal level. In South Korea, which has faced the highest suicide rate among OECD nations for the past two decades, he has been an active voice in promoting evidence-based approaches to suicide prevention and mental health service utilization. His expertise has been sought by major international media outlets, including The Guardian, TIME, and the BBC, where he has underscored the importance of coordinated national strategies to address the suicide and mental crises in South Korea.
In addition to his academic and advocacy work, Dr. Na is the author of two best-selling books on mental health in Korea. These works have reached a broad readership and are being translated into multiple languages, including Japanese, Taiwanese, Thai, Russian, and Vietnamese, further extending their global impact.
