Murray Named Interim Section Chief of Pediatric Infectious Diseases at Yale School of Medicine and Yale New Haven Children’s Hospital

Thomas Murray, MD, PhD, professor of pediatrics (infectious disease), has been named Interim Section Chief of Pediatric Infectious Diseases at Yale School of Medicine and Yale New Haven Children’s Hospital effective September 1, 2023.

Dr. Murray is also the associate medical director for infection prevention at Yale New Haven Children’s Hospital, and the medical director for the Winchester Pediatric Tuberculosis Clinic.

After completing his MD and PhD at the University of Connecticut, Dr. Murray completed pediatric residency at Yale School of Medicine. He stayed at Yale to complete fellowships in pediatric infectious disease and medical microbiology. Previously an Instructor of Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry at Yale University and Associate Professor in the Department of Medical Sciences at the Frank H. Netter MD School of Medicine at Quinnipiac University, he returned to the faculty at Yale Pediatrics in 2018.

In 2022, Dr. Murray received the Champion of Children Award from the Center for Children’s Advocacy in Connecticut and was the recipient of the Department of Pediatrics’ 2021 Norman J. Siegel Faculty Award, given to a faculty member who consistently displays high standards of patient care, generosity, collegiality, and leadership. He was also named a Healthcare Hero by Yale New Haven Hospital in 2021. During both the Covid-19 pandemic and the RSV surge in 2022 Dr. Murray distinguished himself as an invaluable resource to the faculty and staff of the Children’s Hospital and to the pediatric community throughout the region.

A fellow at both the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and the Pediatric Infectious Disease Society, his primary research interests are in infection control and prevention in the hospital and in early childcare settings with a current emphasis the lasting effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on early childcare. Frequently called upon for his expertise and guidance throughout the Covid-19 pandemic and winter respiratory virus surge, Dr. Murray is a trusted leader for patients and their families, as well as local and national media.
