Biography
Matthew Ellman is Professor of Medicine, Director of the Yale Internal Medicine Associates, Vice Chief for Clinical Affairs for the Section of General Internal Medicine at the Yale School of Medicine. He received his bachelor’s degree from Cornell University and his M.D. from Harvard Medical School. He completed his Primary Care Internal Medicine Residency at New York University-Bellevue Hospital, followed by a Post-Doctoral Fellowship in the Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholars Programs at Yale. As a core member of the Clinical Skills Faculty at Yale, Dr. Ellman has developed a model longitudinal, integrated curriculum to teach palliative and end-of-life care skills to medical students. His educational passion and scholarly work focuses on assuring that all medical students graduates with the competency to care effectively and compassionately for patients with life-limiting and terminal illness.

Matthew S. Ellman, MD, is a general internist and director of Yale Medicine Internal Medicine Associates. He practices adult primary care medicine, treating many common acute and chronic conditions as well as promoting preventive care and wellness. He tells new patients, “We will work together to provide you the best possible care that meets your needs.”
A professor of medicine (general medicine) at Yale School of Medicine, and director of medical student palliative and end-of-life care education, Dr. Ellman researches ways to optimize training doctors and other healthcare professionals to provide skillful and compassionate care for patients with serious and life-limiting illnesses. He is most excited about new methods for teaching and evaluating competency in the field.
Dr. Ellman says he chose his specialty after “witnessing the enormous benefits of skillful and compassionate care throughout the course of the various illnesses our patients face during their lives.” He gets his greatest satisfaction from patents telling him he has made a difference in their health and lives. Connecticut Magazine has recognized Dr. Ellman as one of Top Doctors in the state.
