Pathway Programs

Pathway programs (historically known as pipeline programs) provide exposure, resources, and mentorship to students, particularly those from historically excluded groups, who otherwise would not have access to support to pursue careers in science and medicine.

Below are links to pathway programs available through the Yale School of Medicine.

Program for medical students:

Yale School of Medicine Summer Research Program

The Yale School of Medicine Summer Research Program is an eight-week program offered to first-year medical students from Meharry Medical College, Morehouse School of Medicine, Ponce School of Medicine, San Juan Bautista School of Medicine, Universidad Central del Caribe School of Medicine and University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine. The program pairs students with Yale faculty members from various research fields.

Programs for undergraduate students:

Yale BioMed Amgen Scholars Program

The Yale BioMed Amgen Scholars Program is a research-intensive summer training program in biomedical research for undergraduate students who plan to obtain a PhD or MD-PhD in the biomedical sciences. Applications are particularly encouraged from students who are members of groups underrepresented in the sciences, who are the first in their families to college, who are from inner city or rural communities, or who have grown up with financial or other disadvantages.

Yale Summer Enrichment Medical Academy (YSEMA)

The Yale Summer Enrichment Medical Academy is a free, residential six-week program open to undergraduate students (current freshmen or sophomores) from Connecticut community colleges, Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs) and Historically Black College and Universities (HBCUs) that are interested in pursuing medical school. Students will participate in a comprehensive science curriculum designed to improve success in upper-division science courses that are required for pre-med students.

Program to Advance Training in Health & Sciences (PATHS)

The Program to Advance Training in Health & Sciences is a 10-month program that provides undergraduate students or recent graduates with a transformative learning experience to support their goal of applying for and earning an MD, MD/PhD, or PhD in the biomedical sciences. Students receive access to critical online conversations, trainings, role models, mentors, tools, and resources specifically tailored to their future advanced degree track.

Yale Summer Enrichment Research Experience (YSERE)

The Yale Summer Enrichment Research Experience is a free 6-week summer program for undergraduate students who are currently enrolled in an accredited degree-granting institution other than Yale and considering a future career in biomedical research. YSERE seeks applicants who are 1) interested in advancing the goals of increasing diversity in biomedical research and 2) committed and determined to work through difficult challenges.

Yale National Institutes of Health Post-Bac Research Education Program (NIH PREP)

The Yale National Institutes of Health Post-Bac Research Education Program supports recent college graduates from traditionally underrepresented backgrounds to pursue research careers. The program provides the research skills and academic credentials needed for competitive applications to highly selective doctoral programs in the biological and biomedical sciences.
