Yale Summer Enrichment Medical Academy

The Yale Summer Enrichment Medical Academy (YSEMA) is a free, residential 6-week program for Connecticut community college and Historically Black College and University (HBCU) students aspiring to a career in medicine. Students will participate in an intensive science curriculum designed to improve success in upper-division science courses that are required for pre-med students. There will be a focus on learning how to become a successful medical school applicant and how to navigate the application process. There is no fee to attend, and students will receive a $600 stipend. Breakfast and lunch will be provided and help with transportation costs (i.e., bus pass) will also be available. For more information, please see our flyer and brochure.

To Apply

The YSEMA 2022 application will open on December 1, 2021 and close on February 15, 2022. A completed application includes:

  • Two letters of recommendations (one from a science faculty)
  • College transcript (official or unofficial)
  • Resume (including extra-curricular activities)
  • Personal statement
    • Prompt: YSEMA seeks individuals who are interested in pursuing a career in medicine. Explain how this program can help to achieve your goal of attending medical school. Additionally, please share your interests in one of the following areas:
      • Advancing the goals of diversity in the health professions
      • Working toward reducing health care disparities
      • Improving health care for all
