Yale, VA, UCSF Researchers Develop First Eating Disorder Screener for U.S. Veterans
Robin Masheb, PhD, professor of psychiatry, and Marney White, PhD, MS, professor of public health (social and behavioral sciences) and psychiatry, are co-authors of a paper in General Hospital Psychiatry that discusses findings about a new eating disorder screener for use in healthcare and community settings that serve veterans.

Ijeoma Opara Receives Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers
The PECASE is the highest honor bestowed by the U.S. government on outstanding early-career scientists and engineers who are federally funded. Dr. Opara is among 400 scientists who received the prestigious PECASE award from former President Joseph Biden in January.

News Spotlight: The Western Massachusetts MOMS Partnership Completes Data Collection for the NextGen Study, Service Delivery to Continue
The Western Mass MOMS Partnership launched as part of the US Department of Health and Human Services Office of Planning, Research, and Evaluation’s NextGen Study. In September 2024, the Western Mass MOMS team met study goals, successfully enrolling 850 mothers in the rigorous evaluation of the connections between mental health supports and economic mobility. A descriptive report--Building Skills and Peer Connections to Improve Mothers’ Mental Wellness: Implementation of Western Mass MOMS | The Administration for Children and Families--has been published, and additional study results are forthcoming.  Viability, Inc., which leads Western Mass MOMS is expanding access to MOMS programming statewide this year.

Innovating to Meet the Needs of Spanish-speaking Mothers: NYC DHS Shelter Providers Partner with Elevate to Culturally Adapt Evidence-Based Programming
The NYC Department of Homeless Services (DHS) and BronxWorks are partnering with Yale’s Elevate Policy Lab to culturally adapt the MOMS Stress Management Course, to meet the mental health needs of Spanish-speaking mothers, including recent immigrants without permanent U.S. residency and asylum seekers.

Ableism cited as major barrier to mental health care for people with disabilities
People with disabilities make up 25% of the U.S. population. They face elevated mental health concerns and are more likely to utilize mental health services compared to non-disabled individuals. Yet, people with disabilities also report higher unmet mental health service needs and barriers to accessing care. A Yale-led study probes the underlying factors that contribute to this discrepancy and examines the role of ableism in mental health care.

Biomedical Informatics and Data Science (BIDS) Secures a $7.88 Million NIH Grant to Advance Mental Health Research Using AI Technology
Yale School of Medicine’s Department of Biomedical Informatics and Data Science (BIDS) has received a $7.88 million grant from the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) to lead a groundbreaking five-year project. Led by Hua Xu, PhD, the project will establish a Coordinating Center for the IMPACT-MH Program, which aims to advance personalized mental health research using computational tools. Key collaborators include experts from Yale, the University of Pennsylvania, and Mayo Clinic.

2024 Hecht Award Recipient Announced
The Yale Institute for Global Health (YIGH) has selected Nicola Hawley, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Epidemiology at the Yale School of Public Health, to receive the 2024 Hecht Global Health Faculty Network Award.
