Residency in Laboratory Animal Medicine
The Department of Comparative Medicine offers a two year, American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM)-recognized residency in laboratory animal medicine. The program prepares graduate veterinarians for careers as academically based clinicians through quality mentoring in laboratory animal medicine, research, teaching, and administration.
This program is designed to meet the training requirements for certification by ACLAM and provides training in the following disciplines:
- Clinical medicine and surgery
- Anatomic and clinical pathology
- Virology, serology, and molecular diagnostics
- Biotechnology
- Vivarium management
- Regulatory compliance
In addition to didactic training, residents will participate in the delivery of health care to a diverse, AAALAC-accredited animal facility with an average daily census of over 100,000 animals. Residents also will undertake a research project under the supervision of a faculty mentor.
The Department of Comparative Medicine consists of a full-time faculty of 22 veterinarians, physicians, and basic scientists who provide a broad array of clinical and laboratory services and conduct research in metabolic disease, endocrinology, bone metabolism, microbiology, virology, stem cell technology, neurobiology, and collaborative animal pathology.
In this environment, residents are provided a well-rounded experience in laboratory animal medicine, pathology, and research.
