Abstract/SynopsisHigh intraperitoneal pressure (IPP) in PD patients has been linked to clinical issues such as abdominal fullness, mechanical complications (eg PD fluid leaks, herniae) and reduced ultrafiltration. Studying IPP is challenging as the current method of manual fluid manometry is cumbersome to perform routinely in clinical practice. A device that simplifies the regular measurement of IPP may assist clinicians to adjust prescribed fill volumes (V) and reduce IPP. This study focused on determining whether it was possible to use a pressure-transducer to derive IPP measurements and if they were related to manually acquired IPP measurements and PD fill volumes.
activity Decreasing Repetitive Lab Testing May Lead to Increased Costs of Care
Abstract/Synopsis$387.3 billion was spent on in-hospital care in 2011. The Choosing Wisely campaign has made several proposals to decrease this cost, one of which was decreasing repetitive CBC and BMP testing. Several studies have looked at the direct effects of educational interventions to address this issue, but no study has looked at the downstream effects and any delays it might cause. Our study aimed to determine whether an educational initiative could decrease recurring daily morning lab testing, and whether such a measure would be cost effective.
