    Research

    Overview

As Director of Residency Training in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, I direct the educational programs of the child and adolescent psychiatry residency training program and the Albert J. Solnit Integrated psychiatry, child and adolescent psychiatry, and research residency training program. The education and training of the next generation of leaders is a key mission of the Child Study Center, and I collaborate with faculty to provide superior training of talented physicians to care for the many children and their families in need. Additionally, the graduates are well-trained to become academic teachers, researchers, advocates, and leaders to move the field forward in developing and providing the most effective early interventions and treatments for children with serious emotional disorders.

My writing is informed by my clinical experiences and experiences as a program director. I have collaborated nationally in scholarship around residency and fellowship training physician competencies; Practice patterns in child and adolescent psychiatry; Innovative educational methods; and a practical guide book to child and adolescent psychiatry for trainees and practitioners. I am a regular contributor to FOCUS: The Journal of Lifelong Learning in Psychiatry on enhancing doctor-patient communication. I collaborate nationally with a professional group investigating the impact of social media on youth mental health. I have an ongoing interest in immigrant, refugees and underserved populations and policies that provide more equitable care.

    Clinical Care

    Overview

Dorothy Stubbe, MD, is a psychiatrist who treats patients with autism, anxiety, acute stress disorder, depression, and attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) at the Yale Child Study Center.

“Each person I meet has a spark of uniqueness, hope, and potential,” Dr. Stubbe says. “I find joy in identifying that aspect and helping my patients see this spark in themselves as well.”

During difficult conversations with patients and their families, Dr. Stubbe says she takes time to validate their feelings. “Empathic attunement includes active and compassionate listening, as well as providing the facts and evidence-base regarding the disorder and recommended treatments,” she says.

Dr. Stubbe chose to specialize child and adolescent psychiatry to improve patients’ social–emotional health so they can live happy, healthy, and productive lives.

“Helping individuals, even from an early age, gain skills to manage life's stresses and improve self-esteem is immensely gratifying,” she says.

In addition to her patient care, Dr. Stubbe is the medical director of the Yale Hub of ACCESS Mental Health CT, a free, state-funded consultation service to primary care physicians across the state who need help treating children with behavioral health issues.

Dr. Stubbe is the program director for the Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Fellowship program and the Yale Integrated psychiatry/child and adolescent psychiatry/research training track. Her research focuses on medical education, doctor–patient communication, ADHD, social media and youth, and working in school settings to improve the mental health of students.
