The medical professionals in the Department of Pathology at Yale School of Medicine are joining their colleagues throughout the Yale New Haven Health System and across the country in celebrating National Patient Safety Awareness Week, March 13-19.
The annual event is designed to increase awareness of patient safety by encouraging people to learn more about the subject and by recognizing the good work already being done – including at Yale Pathology.
Patient safety is a constant focus at Yale Pathology, as evidenced by our “Great Catch” awards, which highlight individuals who notice when something appears amiss and raise concerns to management. The efforts by Yale Pathology employees bolster the ongoing commitment to patient safety throughout the YNHHS.
Our patient safety efforts at Yale Pathology are helmed by Joanna Gibson, MD, PhD, Director of Quality & Patient Safety, Andrea Viray, Director of Quality Management, and Carla Zaratzian, Project Analyst, Quality & Patient Safety.
“Our dedication to patient safety is at the foundation of everything we do,” Dr. Gibson said. “Our goal is to provide the highest quality of care and service in a safe environment. Please join us this week in saluting our healthcare professionals for their dedication to patient safety, quality, and service.”
Yale Pathology seeks to improve it quality and patient safety by encouraging patients and staff to report any concerns via our online form. From this information, we can implement procedures designed to address these concerns and improve patient care and our services.
“When an issue of concern is reported, we investigate all possible contributing factors and adjust our operating procedures to prevent it from happening again,” Dr. Gibson said. “We strive to maintain a culture of safety and continuous improvement by engaging with our staff to find solutions and allow everyone to contribute to high quality patient care."
