Department announces Clinical Innovation in Psychiatry honors

October 02, 2013

The Yale School of Medicine's Department of Psychiatry is pleased to announce the winners of its fourth annual Clinical Innovation in Psychiatry (CIIP) Awards.

Designing and Implementing an Innovative National Comprehensive Telemental Health (TMH) Program / Dr. Linda Godleski

  • The National Telemental Health Program established an innovative clinical, educational, and research infrastructure that delivered over 1,000,000 telemental health visits to patients of the US Department of Veterans Affairs over the past decade. A formalized national TMH curriculum was developed and used to train over 3250 clinicians. Implementation penetration extended to severely ill patients with delivery of multiple modalities of treatment. Clinical TMH effectiveness was demonstrated in nearly 100,000 new TMH patients who showed an average of 25% decrease in hospitalization rates within 6 months of beginning TMH services.

Computer-based Training for Cognitive Behavioral Therapy / Dr. Kathleen Carroll

  • "We began work on a computerized form of CBT in 2002 to address several practical problems facing addiction, as well as psychiatry more broadly. The resulting program consists of 7 modules, requires no previous experience with computers (the user simply clicks to navigate forward, select topics, and repeat material as much as desired). CBT4CBT has met multiple measureable goals. These include (1) enhancing substance use treatment outcomes and the durability of treatment, (2) effectively conveying cognitive, behavioral, affective coping skills, and (3) extending the reach of clinicians. Our ongoing work seeks to extend these findings to alcohol use disorders, as well as Spanish-speaking substance users."

The Department's Clinical Coordinating Group solicited nominations through July 2013. A panel of five prominent outside reviewers ranked submissions on innovation, demonstrated effectiveness, and significance for the field.

The first and second placed programs will be the subjects of a special Grand Rounds presentation on Friday, October 18th at 10:15 am in the Connecticut Mental Health Center (CMHC) auditorium.

The Department would like to congratulate the members of these two programs and express its gratitude to the Clinical Coordinating Group for leading this effort to highlight and celebrate innovative achievements in clinical practice. The group, made up of institution chiefs and clinical directors, includes Michael Hoge, PhD; Debbie Pearlman; Ismene Petrakis, MD; Mary Ellen Savage, MD; Michael Sernyak, MD; Lorraine Siggins, MD; William H. Sledge, MD (Chair); and Jeanne Steiner, DO.
