Neuroscience Research Training Program
In recognition of the increasingly important role of neuroscience in psychiatry and the increasing need for residents to have practical, hands-on research time during their residency years, the Department of Psychiatry has initiated a specialized training program within the general residency dedicated to nurturing future clinical and basic neuropsychiatric researchers.
The Neuroscience Research Training Program (NRTP), is based on the premise that integrated clinical and research training experiences act synergistically to enhance residents' psychiatric education, highlighting current knowledge and its limits and charting the field's future directions.
IMPORT Program
The Integrated Mentored Patient Oriented Research Training (IMPORT) grant funds time residents spend doing translational research. This NIMH research training grant could be used to fund your research in the PGY II, III, or IV years. In the fourth year, it provides 75% time to do research. This is similar to the amount of time funded on a career award and so provides you with preparation for taking the next step in your career.
CASE Selective Program
While much of residency training involves learning a moderate amount about a wide range of subjects, we believe the process of developing deep knowledge about a more limited topic is important to developing your identity as an expert. The three month CASE selective in the PGY 2 year allows you to continue previous work or develop a new project. Mentoring from a senior faculty member is a key component in this experience. Time is set aside in the PGY 3 and 4 years to continue your work with your CASE mentor. This unique residency experience demonstrates our commitment of time and resources to developing your career.
Time in the PGY III & IV Year
Elective time is set aside in the PGY 3 and 4 years to allow you to continue to explore your own interests. A variety of core placements and elective sites and clinical programs are available for you to explore career interests. These individualized programs of study provide you with foundational experiences with which to begin to build the next stage of your career.
