Applications for Entry as a PGY2, PGY3, or PGY4

PGY2 Entry

Each year, we typically accept one to two residents into the program as PGY2s. The applicants for these positions have often completed:

  • a transitional residency program for PGY1;
  • one or more years of residency training in another field, such as internal medicine, pediatrics, family medicine, surgery, etc.; or
  • one year in another psychiatry program

Please note that per the ABPN:

  1. transfers from internal medicine, pediatrics, family medicine, transitional, or another psychiatry program are all eligible transfers without pre-approval from ABPN (to be eligible for transfer, residents MUST have completed a minimum of 4 months of primary care as part of their PGY-1)
  2. ABPN must pre-approve transfers from surgery, Ob/Gyn, and emergency medicine. Other prior residency training likely will not meet requirements for transfer to psychiatry residency.

Offers for PGY2 positions are communicated directly to the applicants by the Residency Program. These positions are not filled through the Match process, however applicants are encouraged to apply through the ERAS system.

Applications that are not submitted through the ERAS system may be sent directly to Emily Johnson at emily.ann.johnson@yale.edu.

We begin to review applications for these positions in the early fall of the year prior to entry. Interested candidates should submit the following items to us in a single, compressed file in the following order (letters of recommendation and MSPE may be sent separately):

  • Photo (optional)
  • Application (see above link)
  • CV
  • Medical school performance evaluation (MSPE; also known as a "Dean’s Letter")
  • USMLE transcript
  • A personal statement
  • A minimum of three letters of recommendation from medical school or residency faculty members familiar with the candidate’s work, including a letter from your current program director (PD) if you are currently in a training program (a letter from your PD can be included as 1 of the 3 letters of recommendation)
  • Medical school transcript
  • Summary of completed rotations from current residency program
  • Before we schedule an interview for a PGY2 position, the candidate must assure us that his or her current program director is aware of the candidate’s interest in applying to another program and has given the candidate permission to discuss a transfer to our program. Interviews of PGY2 candidates take place during the regularly scheduled interview days that are set aside each year to interview PGY1 candidates. The dates for these interviews vary slightly from year to year, but generally begin in mid-November and run until the end of January.

The deadline for submitting PGY2 applications for review will be by the end of day on November 20th. Any applications that are submitted after the deadline will have a lesser chance for review.

Application

PGY3 Entry

We do not accept transfers into the PGY3 class.

PGY4 Entry

Because of the many opportunities offered in our PGY4 year, we usually have openings for PGY4 positions in the residency program.

PGY-4 placements for our PGY-3 class will be finalize by mid-to-late December. Once those placements are finalized, we will know which, if any, positions will be open for transfer residents. We begin accepting applications in January.

Before we schedule an interview for a PGY4 position, the candidate must assure us that his or her current program director is aware of the candidate’s interest in applying to another program and has given the candidate permission to discuss a transfer to our program. Please note that our program is unable to accommodate applicants with outstanding ACGME required rotations.

Offers for PGY4 positions are communicated directly to the applicants by the Residency Program. These positions are not filled through the Match process.
