    Overview

Dr. Lena Sweeney specializes in maternal-fetal medicine and clinical genetics and genomics. She cares for people with high-risk pregnancies, and she also provides care for children and adults with genetic conditions. She is honored to join each family’s unique journey and to build plans with them during difficult or confusing times in life.

Dr. Sweeney graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Stanford University with Phi Beta Kappa honors. She earned her Doctor of Medicine from University of California San Francisco with Alpha Omega Alpha honors. She completed her obstetrics and gynecology residency at Yale New Haven Hospital. She has remained at Yale for her dual fellowship program in maternal-fetal medicine and clinical genetics and genomics.

Her clinical and research interests focus upon stillbirth/pregnancy loss and differences in fetal development such as congenital abnormalities. She helps families use the newest research and technology, including advanced ultrasound and genetic testing, as part of a careful evaluation to investigate why these occurred. Dr. Sweeney helps people understand the results and all available treatment options, including novel therapies such as in-utero intervention, so that they can make the best decisions for their families.

Dr. Sweeney also works in advocacy for equitable access to reproductive resources and genetic testing, and she enjoys educating future healthcare professionals as an instructor at Yale School of Medicine.
