- I would like to apply to the GHES as a US fellow , but cannot commit 10 months to living abroad. Am I still eligible?
- No, a main requirement of the GHES program is that trainees must train in the LMIC where they plan to carry out their research plan for 10 to 11 months during the fellowship.
- I am affiliated with a US institution other than one of the four GHES, am I eligible to apply?
- Yes, you could be allowed to apply if you meet the rest of the eligibility criteria.
- I am an outside person, with no institutional affiliation, applying to the GHES program as a postdoctoral fellow asking a GHES mentor and an overseas mentor to mentor me. Am I eligible?
- You are eligible only if your GHES mentor commits to appoint you in a postdoctoral position at her/his affiliated institution.
- I am a master’s (or undergraduate) student from one of the four GHES institutions, am I eligible to apply?
- No, the program is not accepting master’s or undergraduate students at this time.
- I am an international student enrolled in a PhD program at one of the US consortium universities. Do I qualify for this fellowship?
- For the U.S. predoctoral and postdoctoral fellowships, non-US citizens are only allowed to apply if they can provide proof of U.S. residency (green card).
- What does the fellowship include?
- The fellowship includes:
- A monthly stipend for 12 months. All stipends are potentially taxable under U.S. and international law.
- Funding for research support (lab supplies, reagents…)
- International health insurance for US applicants
- Required vaccinations for US applicants
- Visa and passport fees
- Roundtrip overseas travel to the training site for US applicants
- Travel and accommodation to attend the orientation at NIH in July
- Would a GHES fellowship help pay for my doctorate degree tuition/fees?
- No, that is not an allowable expense.
- Can I apply as an LMIC fellow if my institution is not one of the 37 GHES affiliated research sites?
- To apply as an LMIC fellow, you must already have (or secure) an affiliation/appointment with one of the 37 GHES research sites. Please check the list under LMIC partner institutions.
- Does the GHES fund LMIC doctoral students (student scholars) at LMIC institutions?
- No, the GHES does not fund LMIC students at LMIC institutions.
- Would a GHES LMIC fellowship support my stay as a visiting researcher in the US?
- No, that is not the intent of the fellowship. The GHES LMIC fellowship is for doctoral researchers to conduct their project and receive mentorship at their home LMIC institution.
