Blood Bank

Yale-New Haven Hospital Blood Bank provides:

  • high quality transfusion medicine care to the patients at Yale-New Haven Hospital and several outpatient facilities
  • education to medical students, residents, fellows and medical technologists
  • support for a variety of clinical and basic science research studies.

The Blood Bank is also proud to house the Richard D. Frisbee III Laboratory for Hematopoietic Graft Engineering in conjunction with the Yale Cancer Center, and to provide oversight of the Tissue Banking Program.

Accredited by AABB and CAP, the Blood Bank performs routine and specialized compatibility testing and provides blood components to support the transfusion needs of a number of specialty services. These include cardiac and vascular surgery; solid organ transplantation (liver, heart, lung, kidney, pancreas); the Yale Cancer Center, cell therapy transplant program, and hematology service; a level 1 trauma center; and the maternal- fetal medicine and newborn special care services.
Although the blood bank employs automated testing methods to promote efficiency and rapid turnaround time, the laboratory is staffed around the clock with dedicated medical technologists who can solve complex serological problems and provide appropriate component therapy to patients. In addition, the blood bank maintains a frozen reserve of some rare antigen negative red cells as well as other Group O red cells to ensure an adequate blood supply during times of shortage.

The Richard D. Frisbee III Cellular Processing Laboratory is an integral part of the YNHH cellular therapy/bone marrow transplant program. This FACT and AABB accredited laboratory performs routine processing, storage, and infusion of cellular products including peripheral blood-derived stem cells, bone marrow-derived stem cells, mesenchymal stem cells, and other cellular products.

The laboratory is a state-of-the-art ISO Class 7 clean room facility. This laboratory was designed with the goal of performing clinical scale human stem cell isolation and manipulation that will improve upon existing treatments for cancer and hematological diseases. The laboratory was funded predominantly through a grant from the Richard D. Frisbee III Foundation.

Current Tissue Bank activities and services include collecting and banking autologous bone products, as well as storing and tracking commercially available products used in a variety of surgical procedures. These products include skin, heart valves, veins, corneas, tendons, pericardium, amniotic membrane and bone, from human or animal sources.

An oversight committee serves to guide policies, prioritize resources, and review service requests to ensure equitable usage.
