Internal Medicine Annual Report, A Decade of Growth and Achievement (Year-in-Review 2024)

Contents

Since taking the helm of the Department of Internal Medicine in 2013, I’ve witnessed a remarkable decade of advancement. It’s with immense pride that I reflect on our collective journey, marked by growth not just in size but also in the depth and breadth of our impact across clinical care, education, research, diversity, inclusion, and belonging.

2023 was marked by an impressive cohort of new clinicians, researchers, educators, and staff, enriching our department alongside a fresh wave of residents and fellows. This period also saw the appointment or advancement of 148 faculty members, including 17 newly minted professors and a distinguished senior research scientist. Our research objectives have been sharpened; we’ve inaugurated new clinical facilities; introduced cutting-edge educational programs; and embraced new leadership in diversity, equity, and inclusion.

This year-in-review document is a testament to the significant strides we’ve made across our multifaceted mission and within our 11 subspecialties. It affirms our commitment to alleviating human suffering by developing innovative research programs, educating the next generation of medical leaders, providing outstanding and equitable care, and caring for our people.

Highlights include the introduction of a pioneering mentorship program alongside new initiatives to enhance physician well-being; an annual celebration of our staff’s commitment and excellence through the Service Excellence Award; the development of innovative care pathways; national and international recognition of our faculty; and enhanced care for veterans at the VA Connecticut Healthcare System in West Haven.

Looking forward, our commitment to strategic growth and innovation remains unwavering. We will continue to advance our research across all subspecialties, emphasizing such broad themes such as aging, fibrosis, immune metabolism, drug design and development, and addiction medicine, which are best explored through a multidisciplinary approach. We will leverage artificial intelligence to optimize patient care and improve how our clinicians interface with electronic health records. We will continue prioritizing equitable care; ensuring access and quality for all; and collaborating strategically with Yale New Haven Health to amplify our collective impact.

This year’s review also celebrates the remarkable individuals within our faculty who have assumed greater educational, clinical, or research responsibilities, reflecting the exceptional talent within the Department of Internal Medicine.

I extend my sincerest thanks to all who have participated in creating this document, and I hope you will spend time exploring it. Your feedback and thoughts are invaluable, and I welcome any questions or insights you wish to share.

Sincerely,

Gary V. Désir, MD
