Internal Medicine Annual Report, A Decade of Growth and Achievement (Year-in-Review 2024)

The Department of Internal Medicine’s Office of Global Health focuses on equitable and bidirectional clinical capacity-building to improve patient care in resource-limited communities in the United States and abroad through its numerous collaborations. During 2022–2023, the office took the following actions:

  • Provided travel for trainees participating in the Global Health Scholars Program to engage in clinical rotations with partner institutions in Uganda, Rwanda, and South Africa, as well as in rural Arizona and Tennessee.
  • Expanded a Local Global Health Elective, providing trainees with clinical and nonclinical community-based experiences through partner programs in Greater New Haven.
  • Continued to run the Global Health and Equity Distinction Pathway to support global health
  • clinical, didactic, and scholarship experiences for current trainees in the Department of Internal Medicine.
  • Made the most of opportunities to learn and discuss humanitarian emergencies and other important topics in global health through Global Health Day and other events.
  • Continued to support the clinical training of chief residents and faculty from partner institutions abroad. The office hosted Christine Sekaggya Wiltshire, MBChB, MMed, PhD, a hematologist from Uganda; and two chief residents from Rwanda, Prosper Ingabire, MBBS, and Véronique Uwamariya, MBBS.
