Biography
Dr. Merchant is an Academic Hospitalist, and Pulmonologist at VA Connecticut and an Associate Professor in the section of General Internal Medicine. She is a core faculty in the Traditional Internal Medicine Residency Program, oversees the residency curriculum in QI and Patient Safety (QIPS), co-leads the residency Distinction in QIPS and Leadership and serves as the Associate Director of GME Distinction in Health Equity, Patient Safety and QI. At VA Connecticut, she serves in the role of Physician Lead for High Reliability Organization, and Program Director for the Chief Residency Program in QIPS. Her areas of interest include High Reliability, promotion of organizational safety, culture of continuous process improvement and inter-professional learning in the realm of QIPS. She has delivered local, regional, and national presentations, publications, and initiatives in these areas. She has a formal training in medical education, Lean Six Sigma Yellow Belt, IHI methodology, Organizational Change Management and is a Master Trainer in High Reliability in Healthcare, and Clinical Team Training.
Dr. Merchant completed her pre-medical college degree from St. Lawrence College and MD degree from Aga Khan University, both in Karachi, Pakistan. She then completed her internship and residency in Internal Medicine from the University of Illinois at Chicago, fellowship in Pulmonary & Critical Care Medicine and Medical Education, both from Yale School of Medicine.
