    Clinical Care

    Overview

Lloyd Friedman, MD, is a pulmonary critical care specialist who primarily treats tuberculosis (TB), latent tuberculosis infection, and nontuberculous mycobacteria. He also cares for critically ill patients in the intensive care unit at Yale New Haven Hospital.

Dr. Friedman was inspired to become a doctor in New York City in the late 1980s, when the incidence of tuberculosis was increasing dramatically in the city, especially in areas affected by poverty. He has been following a cohort of welfare patients in New York to assess the incidence of tuberculosis, AIDS, and death.

The number of cases and incidence of TB has since declined dramatically, but Dr. Friedman still finds it rewarding to be able to support patients who have the disease. “TB requires a long-term treatment, and I get to know my patients over a period of months and years,” he says.
