Clinical Faculty MemberLecture Setting9/1/2024 - PresentForUndergraduate15 Average Instructional Hours Per YearAn integrative overview of the structure and function of the human brain as it pertains to major neurological and psychiatric disorders. Neuroanatomy, neurophysiology, and clinical correlations are interrelated to provide essential background in the neurosciences. Lectures in neurocytology and neuroanatomy survey neuronal organization in the human brain, with emphasis on long fiber tracts related to clinical neurology. Lectures in neurophysiology cover various aspects of neural function at the cellular and systems levels, with a strong emphasis on the mammalian nervous system. Clinical correlations consist of sessions applying basic science principles to understanding pathophysiology in the context of patients. Seven three-hour laboratory sessions are coordinated with lectures throughout the course to provide an understanding of the structural basis of function and disease. Case-based conference sections provide an opportunity to integrate and apply the information learned about the structure and function of the nervous system in the rest of the course to solving a focused clinical problem in a journal club format. Variable class schedule; contact course instructors. This course is offered to graduate and M.D./Ph.D. students only and cannot be audited.

CTW integrates several distinct courses taught previously in the course of the first two years of medical student education - fundamentals of Neuroscience, Neurophysiology and Biological Basis of Behavior, Psychiatry, Neurology and Ophthalmology.
CTW is built upon the neuraxis beginning with a description of the anatomy and physiology of the spinal cord and ascending up to the cerebral cortex, adding disease mechanisms and pathophysiology at each anatomical station. Students have a comprehensive understanding of the normal anatomy and physiology of the central and peripheral nervous system along with abnormalities in key neurological, psychiatric and ophthalmologist disorders.
The course incorporates neuropharmacology, neuropathology and neuroimaging into specific disease models and also as distinct and separate pedagogical entities.
Clinical MD 2025: MAP Neurology Component
LecturerInpatient Clinical Setting8/1/2022 - PresentForGraduate4 Average Instructional Hours Per YearThe Neurology component is a 4-week experience divided into two 2-week blocks offering students a variety of care settings and subspecialties. Students are matched, based on preferences, with the following services: General Inpatient Neurology Ward, Neurology Inpatient Consults, Stroke, Neurosciences Intensive Care, Pediatric Neurology, Veteran’s Affairs Neurology Service (combination of inpatient and outpatient care) and Yale Outpatient Neurology. While the team structure varies across services, in the inpatient setting students will work with a team consisting of an attending, a senior resident, 1-2 junior residents, and APPs. In the outpatient setting, students will work one-on-one with a faculty preceptor, rotating through various subspecialties during their two-week block.

Harry Sutherland, MD, is a neurologist who specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of epilepsy and seizure disorders. He cares for adults with a wide range of neurological conditions, with a particular focus on helping patients manage seizures and related complications to improve their overall quality of life.
Dr. Sutherland received his medical degree from Rutgers New Jersey Medical School. He completed his internship in internal medicine and residency in neurology at Yale New Haven Hospital, followed by fellowship training in epilepsy at Yale New Haven Hospital.
