Siegel Receives Fisher Graduate Medical Education Award

Mark Siegel, MD, professor of medicine (pulmonary) and program director of the Internal Medicine Traditional Residency Program at Yale School of Medicine (YSM), was awarded the 2025 Rosemarie L. Fisher, MD, Excellence in Graduate Medical Education Award.

Established in 2018, the award recognizes program directors and coordinators of YSM and Yale New Haven Hospital residency and fellowship programs who demonstrate an outstanding commitment to world-class training, exceptional mentorship, and career advancement opportunities for residents and fellows.

Siegel noted the immense honor of receiving an award in Fisher’s name that recognizes her lasting contributions to graduate medical education at Yale.

“Dr. Fisher is a legend at Yale and throughout the country, and I’ve always looked up to her as a shining light in medical education,” he said. “Each day, I aim to emulate her commitment to rigor and compassion in residency training.”

As program director of the Internal Medicine Traditional Residency Program since 2011, Siegel oversees the largest residency program at YSM. Under his leadership, the program has eliminated the 28-hour call, established the Academic Support Committee to provide better support for professional development, strengthened community alignment to help residency classes evolve with the patients they serve, and fostered a more inclusive and personalized training environment. He is known for posting his weekly Program Director Notes, which offer insights on topics ranging from personal statement pitfalls to wellness to AI.

Siegel earned his medical degree from the Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1988. He completed his residency in internal medicine at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in 1991 and his fellowship in pulmonary critical care at YSM in 1995.

The other winners of the 2025 Rosemarie L. Fisher Excellence in Graduate Medical Education Awards are Paul Desan, MD, PhD, and Ania Shea.
