    4 Minute Read

To the YSM and YNHHS Communities:

We are pleased to announce that Christopher Whitlow, MD, PhD, MHA, has accepted the position of chair of the Department of Radiology and Biomedical Imaging and assistant dean for Translational Research at Yale School of Medicine (YSM), as well as the roles of chief of Radiology at Yale New Haven Hospital and radiologist-in-chief across Yale New Haven Health System (YNHHS), effective Oct. 20, 2025, pending approval by Yale Corporation and the Yale New Haven Health Board of Trustees.

Currently, Dr. Whitlow is the Isadore Meschan Distinguished Professor of Radiology and enterprise chair of Radiology at Wake Forest University School of Medicine, which is the academic core of Advocate Health. He is also founder/director of the Radiology Informatics and Imaging Processing Lab (RIIPL), director of the Translational Imaging Program, and director of the combined MD/PhD program at Wake Forest.

Dr. Whitlow uses a variety of computational data techniques to analyze research and clinical data, including graph theoretical network methods and artificial intelligence (AI)/deep learning. Through his work with RIIPL, he has translated advanced signal processing and AI-based imaging applications into clinical care, including the deployment of real-time predictive analytics for oncology. Dr. Whitlow founded “Moeræ Intelligence” to bring these analytics to clinical practice and to improve care and outcomes for oncology patients.

A board-certified clinical neuroradiologist with doctoral training in neuropharmacology and cerebral physiology, Dr. Whitlow evaluates patients with a variety of pathophysiologic conditions, such as traumatic brain injury, Alzheimer’s disease, and neurooncologic conditions. Currently, he has more than $23 million of active research funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and private foundations as a lead/principal investigator and more than $55 million of active research funding as a team-science coinvestigator. In addition to federally-funded work, Dr. Whitlow has led extramurally-funded academic industry collaborations, including the development of the first-of-its-kind Ricoh 3D for Healthcare Innovation Studio, an FDA-approved, ISO 13485-certified additive manufacturing facility that provides immediate access to patient-specific, FDA-cleared 3D-printed anatomic models for pre-surgical planning and patient education to clinicians.

Dr. Whitlow was president of the American Society of Functional Neuroradiology from 2023 to 2024 and currently serves on committees of the Radiological Society of North America, American College of Radiology, and the American Society of Neuroradiology, where he is working to develop new biomarkers for diseases and conditions that are of critical concern for population health. He is also a member of the Society for Neuroscience, Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society, International Society of Cerebral Blood Flow and Metabolism, American Medical Association, and American Society of Pediatric Neuroradiology.

Dr. Whitlow earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology from East Carolina University, a medical degree and doctor of philosophy at Wake Forest University School of Medicine, and a master of healthcare administration at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

In his new roles, he will focus on developing faculty and fostering collaborations across YSM and YNHHS. Inspired by the talent and creativity in the department and across the school, he aspires to promote converging data integration and translational innovation and synthesizing imaging, genomics, and clinical information to evolve the interpretation of health information and drive precision diagnostics. In addition to leading the expansion of the diagnostic and interventional imaging services across our academic health system, Dr. Whitlow will contribute to the growth of our Neurosciences service line and help bring the latest, most advanced treatments to the Adams Neurosciences Center at the Saint Raphael Campus.

We want to thank Rob Goodman, MB BChir, MBA, for his eight years of leadership as the past chair, as well as Cristina Fuss, MD, PhD, who will continue serving as interim chair until Oct. 20. We are also grateful to the search committee, chaired by Peter M. Glazer, MD, PhD, and its members, Kelly Cosgrove, PhD; Eyiyemisi Damisah, MD; Marie Egan, MD; Mehra Golshan, MD, MBA; Katherine Heilpern, MD; W. Mark Saltzman, PhD; Kevin Sheth, MD; Lynn Tanoue, MD, MBA; and Arjun Venkatesh, MD, MBA, MHS.

Please join us in congratulating Dr. Whitlow on his new roles and in welcoming him to Yale and YNHHS.

    Sincerely,

    Nancy J. Brown, MD
