Aziez Ahmed, MD, Named Medical Director of Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care and Lawrence Siew, MD, FAAP, Named Medical Director of Yale New Haven Children’s Hospital Pediatric Emergency Department

Aziez Ahmed, MD, has been named medical director, pediatric cardiac intensive care unit in the Department of Pediatrics, Yale School of Medicine and Yale New Haven Children’s Hospital Heart Center effective as of September 1, 2021.

Dr. Ahmed received a bachelor’s degree in medicine and in surgery from Aga Khan University in Karachi, Pakistan, where he was later a visiting research scholar, visiting research associate, and pediatric research associate. He completed his pediatrics residency and served as chief resident at Women and Children’s Hospital West Virginia University in Charleston, West Virginia prior to completing a fellowship in pediatric cardiology at Arkansas Children’s Hospital/University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. Dr. Ahmed then completed a fellowship in pediatric cardiac critical care from Children’s Hospital Los Angeles University of Southern California.

In 2016, Dr. Ahmed received the Jeri L. Whitten Humanism in Medicine Award, given by faculty to the resident who is deemed to provide the most compassionate care to patients. His areas of interest are pediatric congenital heart disease and outcomes research focused on clinical decision-making tools driven by big data.

As physician leader of the clinical service, in this role Dr. Ahmed will lead all clinically related activities and the development, implementation, and monitoring of a variety of programmatic initiatives. He will partner with the medical director of the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, co-directors of the Yale New Haven Children’s Hospital Heart Center, and other stakeholders to ensure the best outcomes for patients.

Lawrence Siew, MD, FAAP has been named medical director of the Yale New Haven Children’s Hospital, pediatric emergency department, effective as of July 1, 2021. Dr. Siew has served as interim medical director of pediatric emergency department since October of 2020.

Dr. Siew received his undergraduate degree from Johns Hopkins University and his medical degree from Rutgers – Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in New Jersey. He then completed his pediatric residency at New York Presbyterian Hospital – Cornell, where he served as chief resident, followed by a pediatric emergency medicine fellowship here at Yale. During his fellowship training, he was awarded the Ken Graff Young Investigator Award from the AAP for his project evaluating telemedicine and its reliability in assessing seriously ill children.

After completing fellowship in 2012, Dr. Siew helped build the pediatric emergency medicine program at Lawrence & Memorial Hospital, now part of Yale New Haven Health System. In 2016, he returned to Yale Pediatrics as a full-time faculty member in the section of emergency medicine. In addition to clinical care, Dr. Siew has experience in clinical documentation, coding/billing, and revenue generation. He became a certified professional coder in 2017 and this fall, he will complete his studies for an MBA in health care administration from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.

In his role, Dr. Siew will continue to be the physician leader of the clinical service and the dyad leadership partner for the children’s emergency department. Together with his nursing partner, Jessica Vetter, Dr. Siew leads all activities in the emergency department, including oversight of the leadership team and staff, and development, implementation, and monitoring of a variety of programmatic initiatives.
