Establishing a Thriving Research Program

Establishing a Thriving Research Program is a course that has been developed for trainees and Junior Faculty who are pursuing a career as a Physician-Scientists or Scientists. The course is run by Co-Course Directors, Graeme Mason, PhD, Professor of Radiology and Biomedical Imaging and of Psychiatry and Rajita Sinha, PhD, Foundations Fund Professor of Psychiatry and Professor in the Child Study Center and of Neuroscience. The goal of the course is to provide participants with the practical skills necessary to become successful Physician-Scientists and Scientists in academia or industry. The course is also a great venue to network with other trainees who are in a similar career stage.

The course is held in person twice a year, and consists of 8 three-hour sessions. Each session includes 2 hours of lecture followed by 1 hour of discussion. Enrollment is limited to 25 participants.

The course will cover topics such as supervision and mentoring of staff and trainees, management of laboratory resources, rigor and reproducibility, data management, faculty appointments, grant writing and grant reviewing, job searches (process, start up funds, chalk talks), preparing animal and human research protocols, creating an inclusive environment and diversity statements, creating a research identity, dissemination of research, and careers in industry.

  • Postdoc Trainees on T32 Training Grants
  • F32 Recipients
  • YSM Science Fellows
  • K99 Grant Awardees
  • Faculty in the first year of their individual or institutional K award
