    Overview

Saber Ghiassi, MD, MPH, director of bariatric surgery at Bridgeport Hospital, has extensive experience in the treatment of obesity and metabolic syndrome. He specializes in the latest minimally invasive, robotic and bariatric surgeries. He also performs many common general surgeries, including hernia surgery.

Bariatric surgery is life-changing for many patients, says Dr. Ghiassi, an assistant professor of surgery (gastrointestinal) at Yale School of Medicine. Dr. Ghiassi has done research on the effects of such operations as the Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, a procedure to reduce the size of the upper stomach, which cuts down on the amount of food a patient can eat. With the use of very small incisions, high-definition video cameras and special instruments, these surgeries have become safer, more precise and less painful, he says. Patients recover faster and are able to quickly return to their normal lives.

Dr. Ghiassi, who also has a major interest in public health, says his passion for medicine revolves around “the ability to make a difference, however small, but occasionally life-saving, in the lives of my patients.”
