    Biography

    Dr. Ingrid T. Katz is a physician-scientist and global health leader whose work bridges research, policy, and practice in HIV, health systems strengthening, and global health security.

    She is the Director of the Yale Institute for Global Health (YIGH), where she leads efforts to expand interdisciplinary collaboration in global health research, clinical care, and educational initiatives across Yale. She holds faculty appointments in the Yale School of Medicine and the Yale School of Public Health. In addition, Dr. Katz serves as Chief of Evidence and Program Innovation in the Bureau of Global Health Security and Diplomacy at the U.S. Department of State, where she advances evidence-informed approaches to global health strategy and implementation.

    Dr. Katz’s career has been shaped by more than two decades of work in Southern Africa and Southeast Asia, where she has partnered with governments, academic institutions, and communities to strengthen HIV care delivery, improve engagement in care, and support durable health systems. Her work reflects a longstanding commitment to ensuring that scientific advances translate into equitable access and sustained impact.

    Research

    Dr. Katz’s research focuses on improving health outcomes for people living with HIV, with particular emphasis on long-term engagement in care, implementation science, and sustainable health system interventions. Her work focuses on sustainable interventions, enhancing linkage and retention in care, and supporting durable responses to HIV and related epidemics. She has published extensively in leading peer-reviewed journals and has led and collaborated on federally funded research initiatives globally.

    Academia

    Prior to joining Yale, Dr. Katz spent 16 years on the faculty of Harvard Medical School and served as Associate Faculty Director at the Harvard Global Health Institute, where she co-led efforts addressing major global health threats, including the COVID-19 pandemic and the health impacts of climate change. She was also faculty at Harvard Medical School and Brigham and Women’s Hospital.

    Mentorship

    Dr. Katz is deeply committed to training and mentorship. She has mentored students, trainees, and early-career faculty across disciplines and countries, supporting the development of future leaders in global health research and practice. Dr. Katz helped to create and fund the LEAD Fellowship to support women global health leaders from low- and middle-income countries. While at Harvard, her contributions were recognized with the A. Clifford Barger Excellence in Mentoring Award and the Dean’s Award for an Emerging Leader in Women’s Careers. At Yale, she is focused on expanding opportunities for interdisciplinary learning and global engagement.

    Leadership and Global Health Engagement

    Throughout her career, Dr. Katz has held leadership roles that connect academic research to global policy and program implementation. For nearly 20 years, she has maintained NIH funding and long-term research partnerships with the University of Cape Town and the University of the Witwatersrand in South Africa. Her work has been recognized by UNAIDS and through her participation as an inaugural member of the Global Council on Inequality, AIDS, and Pandemics. In her leadership roles, Dr. Katz has emphasized partnership, evidence-based decision-making, and long-term institutional collaboration. She has worked closely with ministries of health, multilateral organizations, and academic institutions to strengthen health systems and advance equitable access to care.

    Education

    Dr. Katz earned her bachelor’s degree from Amherst College, a Master of Health Science from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, and her medical degree from the University of California, San Francisco.
