    Biography

    Beverley J Sheares, MD, MS is an Associate Professor of Pediatrics in the Pulmonary, Allergy/Immunology, & Sleep Medicine section at Yale University School of Medicine. Dr. Sheares serves as the Director for the Pediatric Pulmonary Fellowship Program and the Health Equity Thread Leader for the Yale School of Medicine. Dr. Sheares earned her undergraduate and medical degrees at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She completed her residency in Pediatrics at the Children’s Hospital of New York –Presbyterian (Columbia College of Physicians & Surgeons) where she served as Chief Resident in Pediatrics. Following residency training, she worked for 3 years as a pediatric emergency medicine physician at Harlem Hospital Center in New York City. She returned to Columbia to complete a post-doctoral fellowship in pediatric pulmonary medicine and joined the faculty at Columbia. Dr. Sheares earned a Masters degree in biostatistics in patient-oriented research at Columbia’s Mailman School of Public Health. She served as the Pediatric Pulmonary Fellowship Director for several years and mentored many medical students, residents, and fellows.

    After a long career at Columbia, Dr. Sheares joined the faculty at Yale in 2018. In her capacity as Health Equity Thread Leader, Dr. Sheares develops health equity content for the medical school curriculum, partners with faculty to enhance content related to several domains of health equity including, but not limited to: race/ethnicity, sex and gender, sexual orientation/gender identity, disabilities, immigration, carceral status, poverty, housing status, and climate change/environmental injustice in existing courses. She and the Health Equity Thread team creates opportunities for faculty and student development in health equity. Her research interest is in improving health outcomes for children with asthma and behavioral sleep problems and in closing the health outcomes disparities gap in children with respiratory problems. In addition to clinical care, research, and her health equity work, Dr. Sheares serves as a career and research mentor for medical students, residents, and junior faculty members. She is the recipient of numerous teaching and mentorship awards.

    Beverley J. Sheares, MD, specializes in pediatric pulmonology, allergy, immunology, and sleep medicine, with a focus on improving health outcomes for children with asthma and respiratory issues.

    As an associate professor of pediatrics at Yale School of Medicine, Dr. Sheares’ research interests include improving outcomes for children with asthma and behavioral sleep problems, as well as closing the health disparities gap in respiratory conditions. She has led studies on asthma education and interventions to improve medication adherence and quality of life for marginalized populations.

    Dr. Sheares earned her medical degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and completed her residency in pediatrics at NewYork-Presbyterian Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital. She further specialized in pediatric pulmonary medicine through a fellowship at Columbia University.
