Sajid Khan, MD is an Associate Professor of Surgery (Oncology), Chief of Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary & Mixed Tumors, and Co-Director of Team Science at Yale School of Medicine. Dr. Khan is nationally recognized for superb clinical care and excellence in cancer research. He earned his medical degree from SUNY Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, NY and is Board Certified in both Complex General Surgical Oncology and General Surgery. He completed general surgery training at Oregon Health & Science University in Portland, OR and Albert Einstein College of Medicine/Montefiore in Bronx, NY. He also completed a research fellowship in surgical oncology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York, NY and a clinical and research fellowship in surgical oncology at University of Chicago Medical Center in Chicago, IL. Dr. Khan's surgical oncology practice specializes in patients with tumors of the liver, pancreas, bile ducts, stomach, and colon. Additionally he treats individuals diagnosed with melanoma, neuroendocrine tumors, and pancreatic cysts. His commitment to his patients and their families incorporates a multidisciplinary team approach, excellent communication, and minimally invasive surgery to provide an exceptional patient experience. Nationally, he has been named Top Doctors in American by Castle Connolly and consistently ranks in the top 1 percentile rank for patient satisfaction. At the Yale Cancer Center, he is Co-Director of the Hepatic Arterial Infusion Pump Program and Co-Program Leader of Advanced Hepatobiliary Disease.
Dr. Khan is a federally funded, well published, surgeon-scientist who uses modern molecular biology (focused on metabolomics and transcriptomics) to improve society's understanding and treatment of patients with gastrointestinal cancers. His gastrointestinal surgical oncology focused research has been consistently funded by the National Institutes of Health/National Cancer Institute and incorporates principles of team science. The Khan Lab performs translational scientific research to study the scientific underpinnings of liver metastasis and identifies cancer patients who may benefit from liver surgery. In addition, the Khan Lab studies the relationship of tumor metabolites and RNA expression with race/ethnicity and sex. He also performs clinical outcomes research for all types of gastrointestinal cancers. His lab's research is regularly presented at national and international scientific meetings, published in prestigious scientific journals, and featured in national media outlets.
Dr. Khan is Chair of the Society of Surgery of the Alimentary Tract (SSAT) Research Committee, on the Editorial Board for the Annals of Surgical Oncology, and Institutional Representative for the Society of University Surgeons (SUS). He is an active member of the Society of Surgery of the Alimentary Tract (SSAT), Society of Surgical Oncology (SSO), Society of University Surgeons (SUS), National Comprehensive Cancer Center (NCCN), American College of Surgeons (ACS), Association for Academic Surgery (AAS), Southwest Oncology Group (SWOG), American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), Yale Center for Clinical Investigation (YCCI), and Yale Cancer Center.

Research
Overview
Dr. Khan is an NIH-funded, well published, surgeon-scientist who seeks to use modern molecular biology to improve our understanding and treatment of patients with gastrointestinal cancers. The Khan lab performs basic scientific investigation and translational research in close collaboration with other experts at the Yale Cancer Center in order to advance the field of oncology. Our lab is currently studying the genetic basis underlying the mechanism of metastasis, in addition to the relationship between sex hormones, metabolite and RNA expression on colon cancer patient outcomes. Furthermore, we perform clinical outcomes research in surgery for cancers which arise from the stomach, liver, pancreas, bile duct, small intestine, colon, appendix, and skin. Dr. Khan is also the Principal Investigator at Yale for a national clinical trial sponsored by the Southwest Oncology Group (SWOG) studying colorectal cancer chemoprevention.

Sajid A. Khan, MD, is a surgical oncologist who treats both malignant (cancer) and premalignant tumors. He specializes in complex general surgical oncology and general surgery, and is dedicated to improving the lives of cancer patients through his clinical practice and research endeavors. He specializes in the surgical management of tumors that affect the pancreas, liver, bile duct, gallbladder, stomach, colon and rectum. He also provides surgery for patients with skin cancer and soft tissue sarcomas.
Dr. Khan believes patients do best when medical professionals work cohesively as a team. He appreciates being able to draw upon the expertise of a variety of specialists to collaborate in identifying the best approach to each patient’s case. He uses minimally invasive surgical techniques whenever possible.
He says one of the most important aspects of his work as a surgeon—especially one who treats cancer—is his ability to develop relationships with patients and their family before any operation. Dr. Khan takes the time to get to know his patients, providing each with a detailed description of their diagnosis and an explanation of how treatment will proceed. He is careful to answer all of their questions about the surgery and other treatments they will undergo as part of their multidisciplinary cancer treatment plan.
“I tell my patients that my care for them is a long-term commitment that extends well beyond the perioperative period,” Dr. Khan says. “I communicate with other cancer specialists in Yale Medicine to provide a comprehensive, team approach to their care.”
As an associate professor of surgery (oncology), Dr. Khan is also devoted to performing research that will help improve care for cancer patients. “I am very passionate about my work studying the tumor biology of cancer metastasis,” he says. He is currently working on research to identify which patients with a limited number of metastases (oligometastasis) will benefit most from curative therapies, including surgery.
