Nerve Injury, Neuroprotection & Repair

The treatment and repair of nerve injuries is one of the fundamental therapeutic goals of medicine and neuropharmacology. Bodily injuries, chronic diseases such as diabetes and infections can permanently damage nerves, causing severe chronic pain, loss of sensation and motor control, and paralysis. Cancer chemotherapy can irreversibly damage nerves, affecting therapeutic regimens and the quality of life of cancer survivors. The development of treatments for the repair of spinal cord injuries is one of the scientifically most challenging efforts. Research in the Department aims to identify basic mechanisms of injury and novel approaches for neuroprotection and repair.
