Assistant Professor of Genetics
Biography
Dr. Abhinav Thakral is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Genetics at Yale School of Medicine. He holds an MBBS from Maulana Azad Medical College (Delhi). He completed his pediatric residency at Brookdale Hospital and Medical Center, One Brooklyn Health, where he was awarded the resident of the year award in 2024. He is board-certified in pediatrics by the American Board of Pediatrics and completed his clinical fellowship in Medical Genetics and Genomics at UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital. He also holds an MPH in Epidemiology from the University of Toronto.
Dr. Thakral brings vast clinical experience in pediatric care across different settings and health care systems. His clinical expertise encompasses medical genetics, including evaluation of patients with rare genetic disorders, and longitudinal multidisciplinary care of complex genetic conditions, with a focus on partnership with patients and families and shared decision-making.
His research integrates patient-centered outcomes and stakeholder engagement in precision medicine. Dr. Thakral's scientific interests include pharmacogenomics implementation, genetic epidemiology, multi-ancestry polygenic methods, and health disparities in genetic and metabolic care. His work employs large-scale datasets and Mendelian randomization approaches to identify patient-relevant genetic and environmental factors that inform personalized treatment strategies. He is particularly interested in engaging patients and families in understanding how genomic discoveries translate to improved care and reduced health disparities.
