Smilow Cancer Hospital is the only APEx-accredited institution in Connecticut

Smilow Cancer Hospital at Yale New Haven announced that its six Radiation Oncology centers have all been accredited by the American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) through its APEx-Accreditation Program for Excellence; five are reaccreditations.

Reaccreditation was awarded to the Smilow centers in New Haven, Guilford, Hamden, Trumbull and Waterford. In addition, the Greenwich center has received full initial accreditation. Smilow Cancer Hospital’s Department of Radiation Oncology is the only APEx accredited institution in Connecticut and one of only two in New England.

APEx is an accreditation program developed by ASTRO that validates a radiation oncology facility’s excellence in delivering safe, high-quality patient care.

“At Smilow Cancer Hospital, we are very proud to be recognized among the elite who have received this distinguished designation,” said Peter Glazer, MD, PhD, chief, Radiation Oncology, Yale New Haven Health and chair, Therapeutic Radiology, Yale School of Medicine. “This not only provides patients and caregivers with additional evidence of our focus on safety and quality, it punctuates our commitment to deliver the safest and highest quality care.”

Accreditation through APEx is a rigorous multistep process during which the practices are evaluated using consensus-based standards. Practices must demonstrate their safety and quality processes and show that they adhere to patient-centered care by promoting effective communication, coordinated treatments and strong patient engagement.

ASTRO's APEx - Accreditation Program for Excellence was developed by radiation oncology professionals to recognize facilities that deliver safe, high-quality care to their patients.
