Medical Genetics and Genomics Residency Training Program

The Yale Genetics Department sponsors a two-year ACGME-accredited Medical Genetics and Genomics residency training program leading to eligibility for certification by the American Board of Medical Genetics and Genomics (ABMGG). Application for the residency is open to individuals with a U.S. or Canadian earned M.D. or D.O. degree, or equivalent*, who has trained a minimum of one year in an ACGME-accredited residency that includes 12 months of direct patient care.

Our program provides comprehensive training in all aspects of clinical genetics, including general pediatric and adult genetics, metabolic genetics, and prenatal and cancer genetics. All patient encounters are at the Yale Medical Center and nearby satellite clinics and are performed under the supervision of an attending geneticist. Residents rotate in inpatient and outpatient areas, including onsite molecular and cytogenetics laboratory rotations. The residents will complete one month-long block at each lab with full exposure to exome sequencing analysis, microarray, FISH, and chromosome analysis. Until we reopen our biochemical genetics lab, our current biochemical laboratory rotation is at Mount Sinai School of Medicine. A six-month protected block for research and electives can be done anywhere within Yale University/Yale New Haven Hospital.

Upon completion of the program, residents can apply for certification through the American Board of Medical Genetics and Genomics (ABMGG).

* Individuals with a doctoral degree earned outside of the U.S., Canada, or Puerto Rico are strongly urged to have their international credentials reviewed by the ABMGG Credentials Committee for equivalency of their doctoral degree before entering an ACGME-accredited Medical genetics and genomics residency program.
