Biography

I grew up in Chicago and underwent medical school and residency training at Rush University/Cook County Hospital. Then, I completed a fellowship in Bariatric and Minimally Invasive Surgery here at Yale in 2020 where I was trained in both laparoscopy and robotics. My wife and I trekked down south to University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where I joined as an Assistant Professor and Associate Fellowship Program Director for Bariatric and MIS Surgery. We were fortunate enough to be both recruited back to Yale when great opportunities arose and we are ecstatic to be able to call CT home again. My interests are in the surgical treatments of obesity, hernia, and foregut diseases, and I strive to delivery these therapies in the least invasive ways possible.

Clinical Care

Overview

Randal Zhou, MD, is a surgeon who specializes in minimally invasive surgery, including bariatric—or weight-loss—surgery. He is trained in both laparoscopic and robotic surgery and also treats conditions including hernias and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).

“The best part of my job is seeing the satisfaction on a patient’s face and celebrating their success as we work together to achieve their goals before and after surgery,” Dr. Zhou says.

Dr. Zhou says he was drawn to robotic surgery because it allows him to continuously seek out and utilize the least invasive surgical options for patients.

Collaborating with colleagues from across multiple specialties is another highlight of his job, he adds. “Working together, we can play a crucial role in treating a condition, but more importantly, dramatically improving a patient’s quality of life,” he says.

Realizing that surgery can make many patients nervous, Dr. Zhou says he makes a point to reassure them. “I tell them that I always put their best interest front and center, and that I treat them like I would treat my own family,” he says.
