YSM Introduces Student Medical Education Concentration

March 22, 2024

Yale School of Medicine (YSM) is launching a new longitudinal Medical Education Concentration (MEC) to provide MD and MD-PhD students an opportunity to further develop their skills as educators and scholars. The Center for Medical Education oversees the MEC.

The foundation of the Concentration is a series of four interactive skills workshops that will be offered annually. Center for Medical Education faculty experts will teach the workshops, which will cover topics including teaching strategies, curriculum development, and assessment. The 2024 workshops will start in late April and run through mid-May.

In addition to completing the four workshops, students in the Concentration will select eight hours of educator development programming that the Center for Medical Education will offer, and will complete a medical education practicum comprised of 20 hours of teaching within YSM and in the greater New Haven community. Students will refine their skills through observation and feedback, reflective writing, and mentorship by an experienced medical education faculty member. Finally, MEC students will complete a scholarly project that addresses a demonstrated gap in medical education, specifically related to teaching, curriculum, assessment, or leadership. To receive CV credit for completion of the Medical Education Concentration, students must complete these activities prior to graduating from YSM.
