Caridad Ponce Martinez, MD, a PGY-5 Addiction Psychiatry Fellow at Yale, was awarded first place in the Connecticut Chapter of the American Society of Addiction Medicine's fifth annual ASAM Educational.
Her entry was titled, "Liver Transplantation and Alcohol Use Disorders: What an Addiction Specialist Needs to Know." She received a cash prize, a one-year membership to ASAM, and a medal.
Participants in the competition were asked to create a short presentation using a slideshow of how addiction affects patients in a clinical setting, and how this translates into clinical knowledge and understanding of substance use disorders.
The three finalists gave a 10-minute oral presentation, and winners were chosen.
The competition was started in 2012 by Dr. Samuel Silverman, a psychiatrist and addiction specialist from West Hartford.
