Hong Chau, MPH, has been named as assistant director of Clinical Research for the Department of Internal Medicine’s Section of Digestive Diseases. In her new role, Chau will be responsible for the operational management of clinical research in the section.

“I’m looking forward to building more synergy in our research team versus our current silos,” said Chau. “I’m hoping to inspire, motivate, and guide our study coordinators to maximize their gifts and talents to become the very best version of themselves. I hope to strengthen our team’s bond around shared values, feel valued as human beings, and have a voice in decisions that affect them. Once they start to believe in themselves, magic starts to happen!”

In 2004, Chau started at Yale School of Medicine (YSM) in the Department of Surgery before joining the Department of Internal Medicine and the Viral Hepatitis Program, led by Joseph Lim, MD. She was instrumental in the success of over 60 complex and demanding therapeutic clinical studies addressing viral hepatitis, non-alcoholic steatohepatitis, and cirrhosis. Her expertise in clinical research management includes budget development and monitoring, coordinating contract approval, logistics, and regulatory compliance with federal, state, and institutional regulations, policies, and procedures.

In addition to her work on Lim’s studies, Chau also has supervised and mentored research coordinators across the gastroenterology and hepatology programs, generously sharing her knowledge and helping to make programs and individuals achieve their fullest potential.

“Hong also serves in a leadership role on the section’s Clinical Research Task Force, where she has been invaluable in improving research operations and advocating for research coordinators in the section,” said Jill Gaidos, MD, vice chief, Clinical Research (Digestive Diseases).

Since forming one of the nation’s first sections of hepatology and then gastroenterology over 50 years ago, Yale’s Section of Digestive Diseases has had an enduring impact on research and clinical care in gastrointestinal and liver disorders.
