We were quite busy in November and much of that work will continue through December and into January.
We’d like to formally welcome Shivhan Allen, who started with us in late October. She is now actively supporting the Vice Chiefs, Working Group Leaders as well as lending a hand to the Program Manager, Cayetana Navarro, MBA, PMP and Data and Evaluation Johanna Elumn, PhD, MSW in their roles supporting the working groups.
The working groups continue to meet on a regular basis, determining what to focus on within their scope. For example, the Faculty Retention Working Group is gathering information on the promotion process and the Funding & Resources Working Group is learning more about diversity supplements. As always, if you are interested in learning more or participating in one of these groups, please visit the Working Groups website (netID required).
The Office of DEI in Medicine also supported the first ever GME Office Fall URiM Recruitment Dinner, which took place virtually on the evening of November 9, 2021.
I had the pleasure of introducing and welcoming the guests at the virtual dinner, along with Senior Associate Dean for Graduate Medical Education Stephen Huot, MD. There were fifty-seven Yale faculty and trainees that met with forty-seven applicants in program specific break-out rooms for Q&A about Yale. As matches take place for each program, we will be sending out surveys to evaluate the event so we can improve for next year.
The DEI Vice Chiefs held their first ever half-day retreat to learn more about and improve their ability to serve as effective DEI leaders within their respective sections. With encouraging words from Darin Latimore, MD, deputy dean and chief diversity officer; Gary Desir, MD, vice provost for faculty development and diversity and department chair, and each of their section chiefs to get them started, they worked with a team development facilitator, Douglas McKinley, PsyD, to advance their skills on leadership and DEI. At this retreat we also completed a module on self-awareness, which is one of six modules.
For this month’s “Voices of DEI” we highlight Jorge Moreno, MD. Moreno is part of the DEI committee because, “As a Hispanic physician, I hope to bring my perspective and experiences to highlight areas that can be stronger in our DEI mission, and also identify actions that can be taken to reach these goals.” Moreno “looks forward to welcoming more URiM trainees in all our programs to continue strengthening the clinical and research programs at Yale.” Answer this short Voices of DEI questionnaire, if you wish to participate.
Finally, we will be supporting and encouraging people to implement the ‘Hear My Name’ email signature badge throughout the department. If you’d like to do this yourself now, see the NameCoach tip sheet in related documents to help you get started!
Sincerely,
Inginia Genao, MD, FACP
Associate Chair, Diversity & Inclusion
