Medical Education Concentration (MEC) for MD and MD-PhD Students

The longitudinal Medical Education Concentration for MD and MD-PhD students helps students gain the skills and experience to be more effective educators and scholars. The coursework features interactive workshops to develop skills, teaching experiences with observation and feedback, mentorship, and a scholarly project.

Requirements

To receive course credit for completion of the Medical Education Concentration, students must complete the following elements prior to graduation:

  • Academic Component – A series of 90-minute skills workshops (6 required, 2 optional), plus an additional eight hours of educator programming selected from the Center for Medical Education’s educator development program offerings.
  • Medical Education Practicum – 20 hours of hands-on teaching experience at Yale School of Medicine and/or within the greater New Haven community. The 20 hours can be obtained from different teaching opportunities. Skill building is enhanced through self-assessment, observation, feedback, and mentorship.
