For Residents

Residents play a major role as teachers of medical students. In partnership with Graduate Medical Education (GME), the Center offers a variety of programs designed to train residents to become effective clinical educators. In addition to these centralized programs, many departments offer department-specific curricula and initiatives.

This online module introduces foundational teaching skills for residents, including creating a safe learning environment, giving feedback, and teaching when time is tight. Completion of the module meets important ACGME and LCME standards and is required of all residents.

The YSM Center for Medical Education and YNHHS GME Office partners to provide structure and oversight for a specialized training program for residents seeking to prepare for a career as a clinician educator. The Clinician Educator Distinction (CED) provides an in-depth exposure to knowledge and experiences in medical education. As part of this distinction, residents participate in a rigorous curriculum of didactic sessions, practical workshops and teaching exercises, and mentored scholarly projects. Participants are paired with a dedicated faculty advisor who guides them through these steps. Participating programs all use the ACGME Clinician Educator Milestones as an organizing framework for the curriculum. Each residency program administers the CED within their respective departments tailoring the experience to available teaching and mentorship opportunities with a core GME-wide didactic series available to all participating programs. Residents who successfully complete the Distinction with their program are eligible for an institutional-level certificate of completion signed by the YNHHS DIO (Designated Institutional Official) along with the individual department signatories.
