Why did you choose the Yale School of Public Health?
I chose the Yale School of Public Health for its exceptional dedication toward affecting real-world impact. Through the Conflict Observatory and numerous other projects, the Humanitarian Research Lab is an outstanding example of utilizing academic methods to protect those affected by conflict and improve humanitarian systems.
What were you doing before enrolling at YSPH?
I spent nine years in the U.S. Army as a Special Forces medical sergeant, where I primarily worked in the Baltics. After leaving the military, I worked with an NGO in Ukraine teaching trauma medicine.
I came to YSPH as a Pat Tillman Scholar. The Pat Tillman Foundation was founded in memory of Pat, who gave up his NFL career to enlist in the Army after 9/11, became a Ranger, and was killed in Afghanistan in 2004. The Tillman Scholarships are awarded to active-duty military personnel, veterans, and military spouses to make an impact in several fields, including health care.
Being chosen as a Tillman Scholar is an incredible honor. Pat's story inspired me even before I joined the military, and now I'm humbled to join a community that embodies his values of service, scholarship, humble leadership, and impact. These same principles drew me to YSPH and SOM [Yale School of Management], where I'm surrounded by equally passionate individuals striving to make a positive difference in the world.”

What are your favorite aspects of the YSPH academic program?
My favorite aspect of the YSPH academic program has been connecting with an exceptional group of academics, both students and professors. YSPH has an exceptionally collaborative environment, and I have been truly amazed at the countless opportunities available.
What was your most impactful experience outside of class?
In my first week at YSPH, as part of orientation, I went to visit Columbus House with Dr. Danya Keene and several other students. I was immediately struck by the level of integration and care that Dr. Keene demonstrated in her work in the housing community in New Haven. After that trip, I was fully confident that YSPH was the right place for me to learn and grow.
Do you have a favorite Yale place or New Haven food?
I'll go against the grain here – I am a full believer that One6three is the best place to get pizza in New Haven.
What do you hope to do after graduation?
I aim to work in protecting and improving health care in conflict settings.
